12/11/2005 - The Christmas mod from last year is back.
See the screen shot and the Downloads section.
11/25/2005 - For a limited time, I am providing a sneak
preview of Slide Extension Pack 2 for Chris Yoder's
PYL: Expert Edition game. See the Downloads section.
10/15/2005 - Back by request is the Halloween mod.
The pilot mod has been removed for now to make room
for it. Check out the screen shot and the Downloads
section.
7/18/2005 - The actual set of new slides is now
available, along with new color samples and
detailed instructions on how I make the slides.
Check out the Downloads section.
7/16/2005 - The mod files have been updated to feature the
newest slides. Check out the Downloads section.
7/6/2005 - Okay, so perhaps the end is not so nigh.
You are now viewing the new home of Jim's PYL Slides
at http://
pylslides.tripod.com. Since the web space here
is somewhat smaller I will have to consolidate the
download files. For now the mods are referenced to
the old site, and all other download file links
have been updated.
In the spring
of 2003, I first went on TVRules.net and found the
forum of PYL/Whammy! I noticed that there was a thread
related to mods for Curt King's PYL game. When I saw
that the images used in the game could be modified, I
started creating new slide files of my own, using
Adobe Photoshop to apply some lighting and blurring
effects to the slides. I then started this website in
May 2003 to post these slides in the hope that someone
could help me incorporate them into the game.
Later, I found out about the program Resource Editor
from a poster on tvrules.net (Thank you
TalkingHeadsFan!) I was finally able to change the
.bmp files in the game so that my new slides could be
used. I created a series of modified versions of the
PYL.exe file, or "mods" for short, and added them to
this page.
In 2004, and again in 2005, I have revisited making the slides, thanks to
some valuable font input from Christopher Yoder (the
man behind the
PYL Board Configurations page).
pyljim_slides_2005.zip (1.3MB)
- includes the
original color cash slides, directional slides, whammy
slides, and miscellaneous slides.
color_palette.zip (100KB)
- for creating
your own cash slides.
Here are the instructions for my
process on how to make the slides.
lgprizes.zip (1.9 MB)
- prize slides
that Lucas Ganzer made based on images from the show
(mostly).
The mod files
are modified versions of Curt's game using modified
slides. Each zipped mod
file is about 2.3-2.4 MB. To use my mod files, you
need to have already installed Curt King's Press Your
Luck game. If you do not have it, check out the
"Links" section below. All you should need to do is
extract the .exe file into your Press Your Luck
program directory, and then double-click on it to run
it.
Note: If you experience a run-time error when starting
one of these mod files, try adjusting the screen
resolution to 800 x 600 or higher. You can also try
adjusting the values of the prizes that you use in the
game or in Resouce Tuner. I don't guarantee that this
will fix the problem, however.
Christmas Mod
- This mod celebrates
the holiday with decorated trees, new colors, and
special whammies.
Mod for Earning Spins
- This mod is
intended to simulate a round of earning spins in lieu
of a question round. It contains special slides and
board files such that the players are spinning the big
board to earn spins to use in the cash/prize rounds. I
borrowed this idea from a couple other PYL/Whammy!-
related sites.
Season 1 Mod
- This mod
includes the original show color scheme and
whammies.
Season 2 Mod
- Same as above,
but with the newer whammy poses added.
Season 3 Mod
- This mod includes neon
colored cash slides.
Since Curt's mods only allow so many different slides
to be used in each mod, there are limits to these
mod files in terms of how accurately they model
the boards used on the show. But
PYL Expert Edition can handle much more
authentic board setups.
Sound Files
boardsounds.zip (1.6 MB)
- includes all
three board sound files. To use them, just replace the
file "spin.wav" in the "Sounds" subdirectory with one
of these files.
themes.zip (1.5 MB)
- contains new
themes featuring Rod Roddy's voiceovers at the
beginning of each episode. To use them, just replace
the file "theme.wav" in the "Sounds" subdirectory with
one of these files.
PYL Expert Edition
- a brand PC
version of Press Your Luck. Its look and feel is a
combination of Curt's game and GameControl, plus it
features exclusive new slides! (Gee, do you think I'm
really trying to taut this game, or what?)
Curt King's PYL PC Game Website
- for downloading
Curt's 2000 version of the game.
Resource Tuner
- This can be
used to edit the PYL.exe file to create your own mods;
it's available on www.download.com. Just open up the
game executable file (PYL.exe). Then you'll see
several folders on the left-hand side of the window,
including one called "Bitmaps." Just open up that
folder and you'll be able to select and replace any
slide file.
Resource Hacker
- a free
alternative to Resource Tuner; it works basically the
same, except that in order to change values, you have
to save the string tables to text files, edit them in
Notepad or Wordpad, and then read them back into the
.exe file.
PYL Board Configurations
- awesome site
that pictorially depicts the board changes for PYL
and Whammy! Also the home of my now retired board
changes page.
TVRules.net
- includes a
forum for PYL/Whammy!
Brad Francini's PYL/Whammy Site
- provides lots
of good background info on the show.
Jason Hernandez' PYL Site
- includes an
episode guide and airing schedule information.
BASIC Games
- contains
several game-show related games programmed in BASIC,
including an alternate version of PYL. This is one of
the places where I got the idea for the spin board.
Flash Games
- another neat
site with flash versions of bonus rounds from various
game shows; includes Whammy! Tournament Edition, the
other inspiration for my spin mod.
